What Is Sermorelin?
Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide made from the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), the hormone the hypothalamus uses to signal the pituitary gland. That 29-amino-acid sequence is the shortest portion of GHRH that keeps its biological activity.
Sermorelin was previously FDA-approved under the brand name Geref, which its manufacturer later discontinued. Today, sermorelin acetate is available in the U.S. as a compounded medication prepared by licensed pharmacies with a prescription.
How Sermorelin Peptide Works
Sermorelin binds to GHRH receptors on the pituitary gland and prompts it to release the body’s own growth hormone in pulses. Because it acts upstream of the pituitary rather than supplying growth hormone directly, the body’s normal feedback controls, including somatostatin, stay active and continue to regulate how much growth hormone is released.
Sermorelin is often compared with growth hormone itself and with other peptides such as ipamorelin, CJC-1295, and BPC-157. See our guide to sermorelin vs. other peptides.
Why Sermorelin Is Prescribed
Sermorelin acetate may be prescribed for patients a clinician is evaluating for low growth hormone levels. Whether sermorelin is appropriate, and how it fits into a broader care plan, is determined by a licensed healthcare provider based on the patient’s health history and lab work.
Some active adults ask their clinicians about sermorelin as part of a supervised fitness and recovery plan. Read more about how prescribers approach sermorelin alongside training and sleep.
