Liraglutide

Liraglutide is a once-daily GLP-1 receptor agonist used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with type 2 diabetes. It helps regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon release. Liraglutide may also be used as a weight loss aid in eligible patients due to its ability to slow gastric emptying, which may help curb appetite.

Overview

Liraglutide is a synthetic glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that works by activating natural GLP-1 pathways in the body. It helps stimulate your own insulin production, slows down digestion and may reduce appetite by lowering glucagon levels. Together, these effects can support better blood sugar regulation and long-term metabolic balance.

What is Liraglutide Prescribed For?

Liraglutide may be prescribed to help regulate blood sugar in adults and children (10+) with type 2 diabetes and to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with diabetes and heart disease. It is also used to support weight loss in eligible adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27+ with related health conditions.

Other Uses

Liraglutide may support cardiovascular health by reducing the risk of non-fatal cardiac events and is recognized in clinical guidelines for managing nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in patients with type 2 diabetes or elevated BMI.

Research also suggests liraglutide may help support beta-cell function, which plays a key role in ongoing insulin production and metabolic balance.
