Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Open a Medication Vial
Step 1: Inspect the Vial
Before beginning, make sure the vial is labeled correctly and hasn’t been tampered with. Check the expiration date and storage instructions.
Step 2: Locate the Perforated Ring
Find the circular, perforated ring at the center of the metal vial cap. This is the section you’ll remove.
Step 3: Use a Fingernail to Loosen the Ring
Gently insert a fingernail underneath the edge of the perforated ring and begin lifting. Carefully peel it up and away from the vial.
Step 4: Remove Only the Inner Foil
Be sure you’re only removing the inner foil ring, not the entire metal cap. The remaining metal ring should stay in place. Once the gray rubber stopper is fully visible, your vial is ready for use.
Tips for Safe Vial Preparation
• Wash your hands before handling any medication or vial.
• Do not use sharp tools to remove the cap, as this could damage the vial or cause injury.
• After removing the foil, clean the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab before inserting the needle.
FAQ: Opening Medication Vials
Q: Can I remove the entire metal cap?
A: No. You should only remove the small perforated foil section. The rest of the metal seal helps hold the stopper securely in place and should not be removed.
Q: What if the foil doesn’t come off easily?
A: Try approaching from a different edge or using a slightly firmer motion with your fingernail. Do not use sharp objects. If you’re still having trouble, reach out to Olympia Pharmacy for help.
Q: Do I need to clean the vial after removing the foil?
A: Yes. Always wipe the gray rubber stopper with an alcohol swab before inserting a syringe needle.
